SPARK CHANGE PROJECT
Empowering Black and Brown Girls to Develop an Agenda and Testify to Local Policy Makers
Our Mission: The mission of the Spark Change Project is to center girls of color as leaders in advocacy, who discover their activist voices, and galvanize their peers to engage in their own passions for positive social change.
PROGRAM
The Spark Change Project (SCP) will empower, inspire, and train the next generation of female activists of color. The Excellence Project began this project in 2021 with two successful cohorts to date. SCP will center a small group of girls of color as leaders who will gain part-time jobs, find their own activist voices, and galvanize a wider network of peers to develop a policy agenda through a special Spark Change Day of advocacy.

Spark Change Camp
Details
As part of the Spark Change Project, we have hired six high school-age girls of color to work as Ambassadors. Our Ambassadors have worked alongside Spark Change Project staff over the past 6 months to plan and execute several events to educate middle and high school girls of color on critical social justice issues, advocacy, activism, and community organizing. We are currently planning Spark Change Camp, which will empower 6th-12th-grade girls of color by providing a space to build confidence in their identities. Participants will engage with powerful community leaders, participate in activities focused on leadership and community engagement, and apply newly acquired skills to real service-learning projects in the Austin community. Ultimately, girls will find their activist voices to advocate for justice in their own communities. Participants will earn 40 hours of community service, and the final day of camp will be a fun day of celebration.
