In collaboration with LifeWorks Austin, the Excellence Project is proud to be part of the Travis County Transformation Project (TCTP)—a pioneering initiative aimed at creating alternatives to jail for Travis County teens accused of family violence. Recently featured by KXAN News, the TCTP is gaining recognition for its unique approach to addressing the root causes of family conflict, focusing on supporting teens and their families while keeping youth out of the juvenile justice system.
Why Teens Deserve an Alternative to Jail
The traditional response to family violence cases involving teens often involves incarceration, which can disrupt their lives, interrupt their education, and create long-term mental health challenges. Studies show that youth incarceration significantly increases the likelihood of re-offending, setting many young people on a path to further legal issues. The TCTP offers a different path, one that emphasizes rehabilitation, growth, and community support rather than punishment.
What the Program Entails
Through this project, teens receive personalized services that are thoughtfully tailored to their unique situations. LifeWorks Austin provides a network of resources, including:
Counseling Services: One-on-one counseling equips teens with skills for managing emotions and improving family dynamics.
Mentorship Programs: Mentors offer positive guidance, support, and serve as role models to help teens navigate challenges.
Educational and Vocational Support: This support keeps teens on track academically or provides vocational pathways, equipping them with tools to create a stable future.
Families also benefit through family therapy sessions, workshops on conflict resolution, and resources that encourage positive change at home.
Breaking the Cycle of Family Violence and Juvenile Incarceration
The TCTP recognizes that family violence cases often involve complex, deeply rooted issues. By providing teens and families with tools for coping, healing, and rebuilding, the program addresses the underlying causes of conflict and sets teens up for long-term success.
The Excellence Project’s Commitment to Transformative Justice
At the Excellence Project, we believe that every youth deserves a chance to learn, grow, and make amends outside the walls of the juvenile justice system. The TCTP aligns perfectly with this mission, helping to break cycles of violence and build stronger, healthier communities.

We invite community members, advocates, and organizations to join us in supporting the TCTP. By investing in resources that uplift and empower youth, we can amplify the positive impact of transformative justice in Travis County.
